Swimming Men Defeat La Grange; Women Take Second in Tri-Meet

LAGRANGE, Ga. - The Frostburg State men’s swimming team defeated La Grange while the women’s team captured second in a battle with La Grange and Agnes Scott, Thursday at the Charles Hudson Natatorium.

The Bobcat men won 55-24 while the women downed La Grange 37-30 but lost to Agnes Scott 38-36.

Five different men captured individual victories. Junior Will Cross (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) started things off by winning the 200-yard freestyle in 2:03.48. In the meet’s 10th event, freshman Scott Gantz (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) captured the title in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:27.86 and in the ensuing event, freshman Matt Horton (Centerville, Va./Westfield) won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.36.

Junior Brandon Thornton (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills (Howard CC)) and freshman Griffen Williams (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) closed out the meet by winning the final two individual events. Williams recorded a win in the 500-yard freestyle (5:35.52) while Thornton won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.09).

Williams, Cross, Gantz and Haugh each recorded a second place finish as well. Williams was runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle (2:10.66), Cross took home second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:18.87), Gantz was second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.75) and Haugh finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (6:11.58).

Junior Shannon Dunnigan (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) guided the women’s squad. She captured first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:34.18) and second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:47.28).

Sophomore Michelle Nash (Columbia, Md./Hammond) handed in a pair of runner-up finishes. She was second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:15.35) and second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:28.31).

Senior Megan Falls (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) earned third place in the 200-yard freestyle (2:19.08), sophomore Malinda Yost (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) was third in the 100-yard freestyle (1:02.75) and freshman Sarah Sweet (Kensington, Md./Holy Cross Academy) finished third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:28.46).

Frostburg State returns to action January 17 when it hosts Bethany.
