Junior Shannon Dunnigan (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright)
and sophomore Michelle Nash (Columbia, Md./Hammond)
each captured a pair of wins for the women and six different swimmers recorded a victory for the men as the Frostburg State swimming teams swept Bethany Wednesday evening.
The Bobcats women won 84-79 while the men downed the Bison 111-69.
In the third event of the evening and the first non-relay event, Dunnigan got things going for the FSU women after taking first in the 800-meter freestyle (10:15.95). She later captured a win in the 400-meter freestyle in 5:05.47.
Nash recorded her first win of the evening in the 200-meter individual medley (2:59.82) followed by a first-place finish in 100-meter butterfly (1:24.85).
Senior Meg Falls (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) and sophomore Mindy Yost (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) were the only other women’s swimmers to capture victory.
Falls won the 200-meter freestyle in 2:30.22 while Yost was victorious in the 100-meter freestyle in 1:07.67. The duo each managed to capture a second-place finish; Falls in the 400-meter freestyle (5:24.19) and Yost in the 50-meter freestyle (30.80).
In relay action, Dunnigan, Nash, Yost and Falls combined to win the opening event of the meet, the 200-meter medley relay (2:28.60).
In men’s action, three of the six individual victories came in the first three non-relay events.
Junior Will Cross (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) started things off with a win in the 800-meter freestyle (10:56.62). Classmate Nate Haugh (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) won the 200-meter freestyle (2:20.95) followed by freshman Matt Horton (Centerville, Va./Westfield) with a win in the 50-meter freestyle (27.74).
Senior Brandon Thornton (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills (Howard CC)) was the fourth swimmer to earn a win on the evening. He defeated teammate Matt Nestor (Westminster, Md./Calvert Hall) for first place in the 100-meter freestyle (1:00.80).
The final two victories came in the 100-meter backstroke and the 100-meter breaststroke. Freshman Scott Gantz (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) won the backstroke (1:13.60) and classmate Griffen Williams (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) won the breaststroke (1:18.06).
FSU also captured victory in each of the two relay events. In the 200-meter medley relay, Gantz, Thorton, Horton and Haugh teamed to win with a time of 2:09.52 while in the 200-meter freestyle Williams, Nestor, Cross and sophomore Charlie Reimers (Leonard, Md./Patuxent) won in 1:55.39.
Frostburg State returns to action Friday, January 19 when it competes at Pitt-Bradford at 6:00 pm.
