Tennis Splits Back-to-Back Battles

ERIE,PA — The Frostburg State men's tennis team traveled to Penn State Behrend to play a pair of matches this weekend. The Bobcats defeated Alfred, 5-4, in the Saturday match and lost a close dual to AMCC opponent Penn State Behrend, 5-4, on Sunday.

The Bobcats, now 6-5, won three of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches en route to beating Alfred on Saturday.

In the number one doubles slot, junior Justin Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) and senior Sean Shillinger (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) fell to the team of Bill Tuttle and Randy Vecchioni, 5-8.

The second doubles team of sophomores Gary Lyst (Silver Spring, Md./Blair) and Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick, Md./Frederick) took control of opponents Andrew Lee and Steve Ventura, winning 8-3.

To cap doubles play, senior Scott Ruest (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) and junior Pete Della-Luna (Moshpee, Mass./Longmeadow) dominated their match, winning 8-2 at third doubles.

Stephens came out determined to add a win and defeated Tuttle convincingly at number one singles, 6-2, 6-2. Lyst was not as fortunate as he went the distance with Vecchioni, but was downed in three, 6-4, 3-6,2-6.

Ruest dropped his match at third singles, 2-6, 4-6. Shillinger produced a solid win in the fourth spot, eliminating Lee 6-4,6-0, while Spangenberg took a loss to Strieb at the fifth spot, 2-6, 3-6. Della-Luna downed Chris Bean at sixth singles 6-1, 6-3.

In Sunday action, FSU dropped a close one to Behrend, winning three of six singles matches, but dropping two of three doubles matches. The loss leveled FSU's AMCC record to 2-2.

Stephens and Shilinger were ousted at number one doubles by Ryan Deimel and Mike Oey, 1-8, while the second doubles team of Lyst and Spangenberger were knocked-off by John Barber and Jacob Hillman in a tough 7-9 decision.

Third doubles contributed FSU's only four-man win when the team of Ruest and Della-Luna narrowly defeated John Marini and Kevin Fiorenzo 8-6.

In singles, Stephens came out on top again when he bested Deimel in a close 6-3, 7-6(14-12) number one singles battle.

At the second spot, Lyst took the loss, dropping in a three-set war to Oey, 4-6,6-3,4-6. Ruest was ousted in straight-sets by Barber at third singles, 6-7,2-6.

At fourth singles, Shillinger took-out Hillman 6-4,6-1, while Spangenberg dropped his fifth singles match to Marini, 0-6, 2-6.

Della-Luna was FSU's third singles point, winning at the sixth spot over Fiorenzo, 6-3,6-0.

The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday, April 9, when they host Bethany College at 3:30 pm.
