— The Frostburg State men's tennis team swept past visiting Bethany College on Thursday afternoon, taking the match by a score of 9-0.
The Bobcats started off the match winning all three doubles. The first doubles team of junior Justin Stephens (Southern Garrett/Oakland, Md.) and senior Sean Shillinger (Quince Orchard/Darnstown, Md.) teamed-up to defeat Bethany's Pat Green and Zach Richards in pro-set action, 8-1.
FSU's second doubles squad of sophomores Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick/Frederick, Md.) and Gary Lyst (Blair/Silver Spring, Md.) swept Brian Cerullo and Jason Brun 8-0. To cap doubles action, the third team of junior Pete Della-Luna (Longmeadow/Moshpee, Mass.) and senior Scott Ruest (McDonough/Waldorf, Md.) defeated Eric Givens and Bob Shuman 8-0.
In singles action, the Bobcats again dominated. Stephens downed Green in the number one slot with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win. At second singles, Lyst defeated Richards with a 6-0, 6-2 performance.
At third singles, Ruest edged Cerullo 6-1 in the first set, before winning the second by one break of serve, 6-4. In the fourth spot, Shillinger easily defeated Brun, 6-1, 6-2.
The only close match on the day was at the fifth singles spot where Spangenberg went three sets before ousting Givens by a narrow 6-3, 0-6, 7-6(10-6). Capping performance from the singles ladder was freshman Allan Blanks Jr. (Randallstown/Randallstown, Md.) when he blanked Shuman 6-0 in the first before finishing the second 6-1.
The Bobcats (5-4, 2-1 AMCC) return to action at 12:30 Saturday, April 5, when they travel to compete in the Penn State Behrend Invitational.
