Track & Field Has Impressive Showing at Mason-Dixon Conference Indoor Championships
NEWPORT NEW, Va. —
The Frostburg State men’s and women’s track and field teams had impressive showings at the Mason-Dixon Conference Indoor Championships Sunday afternoon.
The women placed second with 109.5 points behind champion and host Christopher Newport with 186.50 points. The Bobcat men were third with 85 points, behind CNU (183) and Salisbury (109.50).
Freshman Sumer Rohrs (Frostburg, Md./Forest (Fla.)) captured the 400-meter dash title in a personal best, 59.84. She also took second in the 200-meter dash (26.45), 55-meter hurdles (8.43) and long jump (4.29 meters). She was fourth in the 55-meter dash (7.59) and was fifth in the high jump (1.42 meters).
Sophomore Adrienne Raiford (Capitol Heights, Md./Gwynn Park) started the meet by winning the first event, the 55-meter dash, with a personal-best time of 7.27. She also took home third in the 400-meter dash with another personal best, 1:00.26.
Together Rohrs and Raiford combined with sophomore Jess Clingan (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) and freshman Ashlee Resh (Sipesville, Pa./Somerset) qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference meet taking second in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:08.69.
Individually, Clingan was third in the long jump (4.29 meter) and Resh was fifth in the 55-meter dash (7.62) and sixth in the 200-meter dash (1:03.00). Senior Chelsea Lewis (Hagerstown, Md./Pike) took home third in the 55-meter dash (7.48) and fourth in the 200-meter dash (27.02).
In the 5,000-meter run, freshman Jennifer Patton (Barton, Md./Westmar) was third with a personal-record time of 19:34.48 and sophomore Katie Lyell (Newark, Del./Newark) was sixth (20:44.32). Patton and Lyell teamed with Lewis and freshman Megan Patton (Barton, Md./Westmar) to finish third in the distance medley relay (14:56.16).
In the weight throw, senior Jenn Waskiewicz (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) and freshman Caroyln Sunderlin (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) each set personal records. Waskiewicz was sixth (10.33 meters) and Sunderlin was third (11.48 meters).
On the men’s side, junior Andy Watson (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) captured the one-mile run title (4:23.66) while freshman Brian Leiter (New Windsor, Md./Francis Scott Key) was victorious in the 800-meter run (1:58.28).
Sophomore David Cheeks (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) was second in the 200-meter dash (23.09) and third in the 400-meter dash (51.54). Sophomore Kevin Williams-White (Reisterstown, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) recorded fifth in the 200-meter dash (23.34) and fourth in the 400-meter dash (51.70).
Leiter, Williams-White, Watson and sophomore Chris Mead (Woodbine, Md./Century) were third in the distance medley relay (10:52.40).
Sophomore Arien Heggs (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) was fourth in the long jump (6.07 meters) and fifth in the 55-meter dash (7.22).
In the 5,000-meter run, sophomore Curt Ruble (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) was runner-up (15:36.57) while senior Ron Lipscomb (Distance Lonaconing, Md./Northern Garrett) was fifth (15:52.19) and junior Andrew Parker (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) was sixth (16:15.99).
Freshman Steven Flanagan (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) was fourth in the triple jump (11.90 meters) and sixth in 55-meter hurdles (8.75) while classmate Michael Sieman (Frostburg, Md./Bishop Walsh) was sixth in the long jump (5.79 meters). Junior James Pruitt (Stafford, Va./Stafford) took home second in the shot put with a throw of 13.09 meters.
Frostburg State returns to action on March 3-5 at the ECAC Division III Indoor Championships in Collegeville, Pa.
