MEADVILLE, Pa. -
The Frostburg State men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Allegheny Gator Invitational, Thursday, for a last chance opportunity to qualify for the ECAC and NCAA Championships.
Sophomore Brian Leiter (New Windsor, Md./Francis Scott Key) was the lone Bobcat on a limited squad to qualify for the NCAA Championships. He earned a spot in the 800-meter run, provisionally, with a time of 1:52.70. The time was a personal best and is currently the 16th fastest time in the nation.
Junior Nicholas Schiefelbein (Kensington, Md./Albert Einstein) and freshman Cory Smith (Piedmont, W.Va./Keyser) also ran in the 800-meter run. Schiefelbein was 10th in 1:57.83 while Smith was 20th in a personal best mark of 2:01.83.
In the sprinting events, junior David Cheeks (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) was fourth in the 200-meter dash (22.54) and fifth in the 400-meter dash (50.43). Both time were ECAC Championship times while the 200 was a season best and the 400 was a personal best.
A pair of freshman rounded out the men’s competition. Garrett Daley was sixth in the 200-meter dash (23.56) and Michael O’Brien (Baltimore, Md./Arundel) was sixth in the triple jump in a personal best 12.81 meters (42 ft. 0.25 in.).
Freshman Gwen Massey (Thorofare, N.J./West Deptford) was the lone woman to compete for FSU. She ran a season best time of 2:27.45 and took seventh in the 800-meter run.
