02/16/2006

FROSTBURG, Md. — The Frostburg State track & field team’s travel to Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va. this weekend for the Mason-Dixon Conference Indoor Championships. The meet will get under way with the field events starting at 9:30 am, while the running events are scheduled to start at 11:30 am.

This weekend, the Bobcats will look to add more athletes to the current list of 13 Eastern College Athletic Conference qualifiers and one NCAA Championship entry.

Last Saturday at the Bucknell Bison Open, sophomore David Cheeks ((Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) qualified for the NCAA National Championships in the 55-meter dash (6.47).

This season, Cheeks also qualified for the ECAC meet in the 60-meter dash and 400-meter run as well as part of the 4x200-meter relay team and the distance medley relay team. As part of the 4x200, he will join sophomores Kevin White (Reisterstown, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) and Arien Heggs (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) and freshman Tade Turton (Pittsville, Md./Riverside). In the DMR, he will join senior Brian Bonn (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie), junior Andy Watson (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) and freshman Brian Leiter (New Windsor, Md./Francis Scott Key).

Individually, Heggs qualified for ECAC in the 60-meter dash while Watson claimed a spot in the 1,000-meter run. Sophomore Curt Ruble (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) is the only other men’s runner going to the ECAC meet, having qualified in the 3,000-meter run.

The women boast five different runners going to the ECAC meet. Freshman Sumer Rohrs (Frostburg, Md./Forest (Fla.)) made the cut in four events; the 55-meter dash, 55-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash and 400-meter run.

Sophomore Adrienne Raiford (Capitol Heights, Md./Gwynn Park) and senior Chelsea Lewis (Hagerstown, Md./Pike) each qualified for one individual event as well as part of a relay unit. Raiford will be running in the 200-meter dash while Lewis will be entering the 60-meter dash. They combine with sophomore Jess Clingan (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) and freshman Ashlee Resh (Sipesville, Pa./Somerset) in the 4x200-meter relay.

“I am excited to see both our men and women compete at the conference championships,” said Head Coach Felix Moreno. “They have worked very hard this year and they should perform well. The athletes have been very focused this week and hopefully that is a sign of good things to come.”

Following the conference championships, the Bobcats will travel to the ECAC Division III Indoor Championships at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa.
