MORGANTOWN, WV –
Both the Frostburg State men’s and women’s track and field teams opened their indoor seasons at the West Virginia University Holiday Classic Saturday. The Bobcats received solid performances against a field primarily composed of Division I programs.
On the women’s side, junior Chelsea Lewis (Hagerstown, Md./Pike) finished 12th in the 55-meter dash (7.72) and was also 15th in the 200-meter dash (27.56). Her marks were just shy of the ECAC qualifying times of 7.50 and 27.00, respectively.
Fellow junior Jenn Waskiewicz (Taneytown, Md./Union Bridge) placed sixth in the weight throw (41-2.5) and 11th in the shot put (30-9.25), while sophomore Sheila Kurtz (Thurmont, Md./Boonsboro) finished a strong 18th in the 400-meter dash (1:05.94).
Several freshmen enjoyed strong collegiate debuts.
Jess Clingan (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) finished a very solid ninth in the 400-meter dash (1:02.95), not far from the 60.74 ECAC qualifying mark, and she was also 11th in the 55-meter hurdles (9.43). Christine Woody (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) placed 10th in the 800-meter run (2:49.87), Joanna Urbanski (Mt. Savage, Md./Beall) finished 10th in the high jump (4-10.5) and junior Charise Burton (Myersville, Md./Oakland Mills) tied for 14th in the high jump (4-8.75).
Freshman Stephanie Potter (Ellicott City, Md./Seton Keough) was 16th in the long jump (15-1.5).
In the 4x400-meter relay, the team of Kurtz, sophomore Adrienne Raiford (Capitol Heights, Md./Gwynn Park), Lewis and Clingan finished ninth in 4:29.88, while the team of Potter, sophomore Janine Luckett (Mitchellville, Md./Laurel), Woody and sophomore Keisha Gray (Temple Hills, Md./Oxon Hill) was 15th in 5:08.84.
On the men’s side, senior Terrell Hayes (Rockville, Md./Wheaton) was FSU’s top finisher, placing third in the weight throw with a personal-best toss of 44-11.75.
Freshman Ryan Abe (Frostburg, Md./Beall) added another top-10 effort, finishing sixth in the 800-meter run (2:07.92).
Freshman Trevor Gibb (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) turned in a solid day, tying for seventh in the high jump (5-8.75), placing 11th in the triple jump (37-6.5) and finishing 20th in the long jump (17-8.25).
Fellow freshman Adam Jones (Homer City, Pa./United) was sixth in the shot put (42-4.25) and seventh in the triple jump (40-2.75), while classmate Ryan Chew (Washington, D.C./Blake) was 12th in the 400-meter dash (53.26) and 18th in the long jump (18-3.25).
Freshman Trevor Albro (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) was 11th in the 400-meter dash (52.93), freshman Genya Cole (Upper Marlboro, Md./Hyde, Maine) was 17th in the 400-meter dash (54.58) and freshman Kevin White (Reisterstown, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) was 21st in the 400-meter dash (55.60) and 31st in the 200-meter dash (24.26).
Junior Jonas Horst (Clear Spring, Md./Clear Spring) tied for 16th in the long jump (18-10.75.
In the 4x400-meter relay, the team of freshman Elon Mitchell (Bowie, Md./Laurel), Abe, Gibb and Cole was 10th in 3:44.45, while the quartet of Horst, Albro, Chew and White was 11th in 3:46.76.
"Overall, both teams performed as expected and did an excellent job," said Head Coach Felix Moreno. "We’re looking forward to our next meet at Dickinson College this Friday."
