FROSTBURG, MD -
The Frostburg State men’s and women’s track and field team had another very strong showing as they competed in the West Virginia University State Farm Games this past weekend.
The Bobcats presented themselves early as in the first race junior Maria Ferguson (Laurel/Fairmount Heights, Md.) finished fifth in the 60-meter dash in what Head Coach Felix Moreno described as an off day for the young sprinter.
Finishing not far behind was freshman Heather Lease (Fort Hill/Cumberland, Md.) as she finished 12th overall.
Ferguson continued her strong performance as she again grabbed a third place finish in the 200-meter dash, as she was again closely followed by Lease who again finished 12th.
Other strong finishers were senior Serena Wheeler (Mergenthaler/Baltimore, Md.), who finished 6th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.17, and freshman Sarah Valenta (Home School/Frostburg, Md.), who was 13th in the 1,000-meter run.
Senior Cindy Reese (Westminster/Westminster, Md.) qualified for the ECAC Championship with a seventh-place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 2.90 meters (9-6.25). The height is a new school record previously set three years ago by Cheronda Lee at 9-6.
On the men’s side freshman Andrew Hackett (Mergenthaler/Baltimore, Md.) qualified with his fourth place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 13.56 meters (44-6).
"Andrew has been a pleasant surprise, he has met ECAC standard and he is capable of meeting the NCAA standard," said Moreno.
Other performances on the day include sophomore Ron Lipscomb (Northern Garrett/Lonaconing, Md.) in the one-mile run with a time of 4:39.45 (16th place), freshman Ed May (LaPlata/Bryantown, Md.) in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:22.20 (12th), sophomore Mike Replogle (Francis Scott Key/Union Bridge, Md.) also in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:23.60 (18th) and sophomore Terrell Hayes (Wheaton/Rockville, Md.) in the weight throw as he finished sixth with a throw of 13.13 meters (43-1). All marks were personal bests for each individual.
"Overall, everyone did an excellent job," said Moreno. "Both teams were very competitive."
Both the men’s and women’s teams will look to finish the season strong as they will compete in the George Mason University Invitational on Saturday, February 15th before participating in the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships on February 22nd.
