MORGANTOWN, WV —
The Frostburg State University men’s and women’s track and field teams enjoyed a strong start to their indoor season Saturday at the West Virginia University Holiday Classic.
On the women's side, freshman Anna Routzahn (Frederick, Md./Frederick) qualified for the ECAC Championships and also met the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III National Championships in the high jump with a mark of 5-4.25. She finished second ahead of several athletes from Division I schools.
Sophomores Jenn Waskiewicz (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) and Brittany Knowles (Rockville, Md./Rockville) set personal records in both the shot put and hammer throw. Waskiewicz threw the shot 37-3.75 and the hammer 40-2, while Knowles had marks of 25-1.25 in the shot and 18-6 in the hammer.
Freshman Ashley Ermer (Sykesville, Md./Liberty) also set a personal record in the shot put (19-11.5).
Junior Laura Knight (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) tied for fourth in the pole vault (8-6.25), while junior Michelle Lange (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) finished 14th in the high jump (4-4).
Sophomore Tredia Howell (Baltimore, Md./Franklin) was ninth in the high jump (4-9.75) and also finished the 200-meter run in 29.21.
Junior Chelsea Lewis (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) posted the third-fastest time in the 200-meter run (27.50) and the fifth-fastest time in the 55-meter dash (7.55 seconds), while freshman Andrea Dickerson (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) ran the 55-meter dash in 7.90 seconds and the 200-meter run in 31.38.
Freshman Amanda Clayton (Frederick, Md./Linganore) set a personal record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:30.84, and freshman Tiffany McPhatter (Lanham, Md./Central) finished the 400-meter run in 1:05.34.
Junior Lynnea Finch (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) joined Clayton, Howell and McPhatter for a fifth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:19.55.
On the men's side, junior Terrell Hayes (Rockville, Md./Wheaton) finished third in the hammer throw (44-10), while sophomore Jonas Horst (Clear Spring, Md./Clear Spring) placed sixth in the long jump (19-0.5) and added a time of 25.04 in the 200-meter run.
Sophomore Matt Morgan (Frostburg, Md./Beall) posted a time of 2:16.21 in the 800-meter run, while freshman Calvin Kipple (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) ran the event in 2:35.11.
Freshmen Joel Richard (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) and J.T. Hoover (Warton, Md./Kent County) both enjoyed impressive debuts. Richard threw the shot 28-11.75, while Hoover threw the shot 30-7.5 (13th) and ran the 55-meter dash in 7.64 seconds.
Freshman Bryan Powers (Baltimore, Md./Arch Bishop) posted a solid time of 8.68 seconds in the 55-meter high hurdles and added a 26.22 in the 200-meter run.
Freshman Michael Trimble (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) ran the 500-meter in 1:16.50 and sophomore Mike Moxley (Frederick, Md./Linganore) posted a time of 25.41 in the 200-meter run.
"Th e women performed remarkably well for our first meet of the season and were extremely competitive against Division I teams, while the men did very well considering the magnitude of this event in relationship to our youth on the team," said FSU head coach Felix Moreno. "Both teams have been working very hard, and that shows in the results. I am very excited about the season."
