Trident Initiative at FSU to Hold Fourth Annual Entrepreneurship Conference
09/04/2009

The Trident Initiative at Frostburg State University, the Western Maryland SCORE Chapter 0682 and the Small Business Development Center – Western Region announce the Fourth Annual Entrepreneurship Conference will be held Thursday, Sept. 24, and Friday, Sept. 25, at the Lane University Center at FSU.

Titled “Turning Your Green Ideas Into Gold … Entrepreneurial Pathways to Shaping a Sustainable Economic Future,” this year’s conference will emphasize green entrepreneurship opportunities and practices within the region. Practicing entrepreneurs, thought leaders in sustainable practices and economic development, and business experts from various industry sectors will share their insights and experiences on the adoption of green technologies. The conference will also hold a vital information session on locating funding from diverse sources to support the startup and ongoing operations of green and/or greening businesses.

An important element of this event is to recognize and honor leading entrepreneurs of the region with a view to showcasing “best practices” in small business. Accordingly, the 2009 Model Entrepreneur of the Year and 2009 Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards will be made at an Awards Luncheon ceremony on Friday, Sept. 25, in the Lane Center.

In support of the Trident Initiative mission, the conference will address the needs of a diverse audience that includes current and aspiring entrepreneurs; the academic community consisting of students, faculty and staff of regional institutions; economic development agencies; government entities; and the region’s citizenry at large. Cumberland Mayor Lee Fiedler and pre-eminent business leaders of the region will address the conference.

The Trident Initiative is a comprehensive, entrepreneurship-based educational project funded by a multiyear grant from the Coleman Foundation in Chicago. This project attempts to enhance the current Entrepreneurship/Small Business undergraduate program at FSU by engaging and serving a core set of stakeholders that includes current students, through practice and networking; regional faculty, through discipline-specific and cross-disciplinary research on regional small business issues; and entrepreneurs (including program alumni) and economic development practitioners, through mentoring and fostering a climate of entrepreneurial ingenuity.
