"Vagina Monologues" to be Presented at FSU as Part of V-Day Events
02/13/2004

A benefit performance of Eve Ensler’s ground-breaking, Obie Award-winning play, "The Vagina Monologues," will be presented at Frostburg State University Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27 and 28, as the culmination of more than a week of events marking V-Day, a campaign to stop violence against women and girls around the world. The performances will be at 8 p.m. each night in the Performing Arts Center Pealer Recital Hall.

This is the third year FSU has marked V-Day as part of the College Campaign. Through V-Day campaigns, local volunteers and college students produce annual benefit performances of "The Vagina Monologues" to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within their own communities. In 2003, nearly 1,000 V-Day benefit events were presented by volunteer activists around the world. V-Day, a non-profit corporation, distributes funds to grassroots, national, and international organizations and programs.

Hailed by The New York Times as "funny" and "poignant," “The Vagina Monologues,” which was first performed off-Broadway by the author, dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in women’s experiences. Ensler has performed the play throughout the world. Villard Books/Random House published “The Vagina Monologues,” which includes a foreword by Gloria Steinem, in February 1998. A special V Day edition of the play, including two new sections about the College Campaign, was released in February 2001.

Other V-Day events at FSU begin with the Clothesline Project on Thursday, Feb. 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Lane University Center Manicur Assembly Hall. On Monday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m. in the Cordts Physical Education Leake Room, Ronda Pick from the Family Resource Crisis Center will speak about ways to guard against sexual assault. University Programming Council will sponsor poet Dana Gilmore, who will read in the Lane University Center Loft at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25.

This benefit production of "The Vagina Monologues" is sponsored by FSU Women’s Studies Program, the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, Amnesty International, Alpha Phi Omega and the University Programming Council. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for non-students and may be reserved by calling (301) 687-7462. For more information about V Day, visit www.vday.org.

FSU is committed to making all of its programs, services and activities accessible to persons with disabilities. To request accommodations through the ADA Compliance Office, call (301) 687-4102, TDD (301) 687-7955.
