BALTIMORE, Md. —
The Frostburg State volleyball team downed Washington 3-1 and Hood 3-0 on the first day of the third annual Division III Maryland State Volleyball Tournament Friday at Johns Hopkins University.
The Bobcats (5-7), who have won the past two state titles, advance to the championship bracket tomorrow starting at 11. The other two championship bracket participants will be determined by the final round of pool play that begins tomorrow at 9 am.
In its first match of the day, Frostburg State posted a 30-15, 30-24, 29-31, 30-26 victory over the Shorewomen.
Senior Carly McDonald (Owings, Md./Northern) posted 15 kills, while junior Amanda Hernandez (Crofton, Md./Arundel) led the way with 42 assists.
Senior Kristie Butt (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) recorded 17 digs, and freshman Jenny Wheaton (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) added four service aces.
The Bobcats then swept Hood by scores of 30-24, 30-17 and 31-29.
Junior Amanda Frantz (Friendsville, Md./Northern Garrett (Garrett College)) and freshman Caryn Wright (Pikesville, Md./Western Tech) each had seven kills, while Hernandez posted 24 assists and three service aces. Wheaton added four more service aces.
