- Frostburg State University volleyball charged out of the gate opening their season on Friday afternoon winning both of their two opening round games of the Muhlenberg Tournament.
In their first match the Bobcats were faced with Alvernia College as part of pool B that also included host Muhlenberg. The Bobcats dominated the match sweeping Alvernia 30-24, 30-17 30-21 for their first win of the season.
In the first match, AMCC preseason player of the year junior Lauren Petrick (North Caroline/Denton, Md.) led the way with 11 kills. Junior Jodie Carpenter (Linganore/Mt. Airy, Md.) added 10 and senior Kelly Bumgarner (Calvert/Chesapeake Beach, Md.) added eight.
Juniors Carrie Ness (Francis Scott Key/Taneytown, Md.) and Sam Seyfferth (Broadneck/Annapolis, Md.) contributed huge as Ness racked up 38 assists and Seyfferth had 9 digs.
In the second match of pool B, FSU was matched Muhlenberg who had also defeated Alvernia earlier in the afternoon. The winner would advance to play with winners from pool A and C on Saturday. FSU came out just as strong as they did in the first match easily defeating Muhlenberg 30-19, 30-24, 30-22.
In the second match Petrick again dominated with nine kills tied with sophomore Kim Embrey (Liberty/Sumerduck, Va). Sophomore Carly McDonald (Northern/Owings, Md.) add seven and Carpenter six.
Again Ness and Seyfferth were key with 32 assists from Ness and 14 digs from Seyfferth.
At 2-0 in pool B the Bobcats will advance to play Ithaca the pool C champion at 9:00 am and Moravian the pool A champion at 11:00 am on Saturday.
