Sophomore Lauren Petrick (North Caroline/Denton, Md.)
earned Tournament Most Valuable Player honors after recording 69 kills in four matches to lead Frostburg State to the championship of the Salisbury Sea Gull Classic this past weekend in Salisbury, Md.
The Bobcats (11-3), who have won six in a row and eight of their last nine, opened the tournament with a pair of wins Friday night. FSU swept Johns Hopkins, 3-0 (30-28, 30-19, 30-23) in its first match behind Petrick's 15 kills and 11 digs. Fellow sophomore Carrie Ness (Francis Scott Key/Taneytown, Md.) added 42 assists, while junior Kelli Bumgarner (Calvert/Chesapeake Beach, Md.) had 12 kills.
The Red and Black then downed tournament host Salisbury, 3-1 (30-27, 30-17, 21-30, 30-28) later in the evening. Petrick again topped the squad with 15 kills, with Bumgarner adding 10 kills and 12 digs. Ness posted 36 assists in the impressive win.
The Bobcats continued their charge to the title on Saturday, pulling out a 3-2 win over Richard Stockton.
FSU dropped the first game, 30-28, before rallying for wins in the next two contests, 30-18 and 30-26, respectively.
Richard Stockton pulled even with an exciting 30-27 victory in the fourth game, but the Bobcats held on in the deciding fifth game, 16-14.
Petrick and Bumgarner were too much to handle, as each posted 20 kills. Ness kept up here outstanding play with 54 assists.
The Bobcats clinched the tournament crown with a strong 3-1 victory over Catholic. After falling in the opener, 30-26, FSU reeled off 30-24, 30-26 and 30-21 wins.
Petrick sealed MVP honors with 19 kills and 10 digs, while Bumgarner posted 22 kills and four service aces.
Ness added 57 assists and joined Petrick on the All-Tournament Team.
The Bobcats look to continue their roll on Friday when they open their home slate against Lake Erie at 5:00 pm.
