Frostburg State rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth and deciding game but fell short in its comeback attempt, losing to La Roche, 3-2, in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference contest Monday night.
The Bobcats fell to 9-13 overall and 3-4 in the AMCC, while the Redhawks improved to 3-16 and 3-3 in league action.
Playing without freshman starting setter Carrie Ness (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key), who sprained her ankle in last weekend's Gallaudet Invitational, Frostburg State dropped the first two games, 30-24 and 30-26.
A switch in rotation to start game three seemed to spark the Bobcats, who rebounded for a 30-26 victory.
Despite losing junior outside hitter Stacy Bureau (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery), who entered the night ranked third on the team in kills, to another ankle injury in the third stanza, FSU again battled for a 30-28 win in game four to even the match.
In the decisive fifth game, the Bobcats overcame an early 5-1 deficit to take a 6-5 lead. The teams then went back and forth the rest of the way before the Redhawks pulled out a 15-13 win to seal the match.
Freshman Jen Vance (Mt. Savage, Md./Fort Hill) led the Bobcats with a career-high 17 kills and added 19 digs and five service aces.
Junior Marjorie Loggie (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill) had personal-best 14 kills, nine digs and eight blocks.
Freshman Sam Seyfferth (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) had a career-high 24 digs to go along with 17 assists, with fellow freshman Lauren Petrick (Denton, Md./North Caroline) adding a team-high 30 assists, 11 digs and five aces.
Frostburg State visits Penn State Behrend on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
