FROSTBURG, Md. —
The Frostburg State volleyball team defeated Pitt-Greensburg 3-1 in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament First Round match Tuesday evening at Bobcat Arena.
Frostburg State improved to 17-15 overall while UPG fell to 8-25 overall.
FSU, who is currently riding a four-game winning streak, took game one 30-18. The hosts jumped out to a 10-2 lead and further extended that lead to 16-3 behind five service points from junior Amanda Hernandez (Crofton, Md./Arundel) and four service points from senior Krisite Butt (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley). UPG would narrow the gap to 23-16 but FSU proved to be too much taking the match 30-18.
In game two, Pitt-Greensburg took the early 3-1 lead but watched as FSU rebounded to take a 6-3 advantage. UPG would again surge ahead taking a 9-8 lead behind three service points from Breanne Bell.
FSU would open a 17-12 lead, but again watched it evaporate as Pitt-Greensburg battled back to to tie the game at 17. That would be as close at the visitors would get, however, as FSU opened leads of 25-19 and 29-22 before taking the game 30-25.
Frostburg State came out with high intensity in game three taking a 10-2 lead on seven service points from senior Carly McDonald (Owings, Md.Northern). FSU extended the lead to 22-9 but UPG rebounded scoring 11 out of the games next 12 points to close to within five at 24-19. Brandie Mikulan and Amanda Brant were responsible for nine UPG service points during that stretch. Pitt-Greensburg later tied the game at 27 and took their first lead at 29-28 before going on to win 31-29.
Game four started out like game three with Frostburg State opening a 13-1 lead backed by 12 service points from freshman Jenny Wheaton (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge). Wheaton would later add four more service points to her total, pushing the FSU lead to 24-9. Junior Amanda Frantz (Friendsville, Md./Northern Garrett (Garrett College)) smashed three kills down the stretch to seal a 30-13 victory for FSU.
McDonald led the charge for FSU with 18 kills followed by 15 from Frantz and 14 from freshman Caryn Wright (Pikesville, Md./Western Tech). Wright also posted six total blocks.
Hernandez had a solid all-around performance with 56 assists, 10 digs and 3.5 total blocks. Butt led Frostburg State with 14 digs while Wheaton had 11 digs and three service aces.
The Bobcats return to action Friday when they travel to Erie, Pa. to take on Penn State Altoona in the AMCC Tournament Semifinals at 8:00 pm.
