FROSTBURG, Md. -
The Frostburg State volleyball team dropped both opening round matches at the Battlefield Classic, Friday evening.
The Bobcats (1-6) lost the first match to Seton Hill, 3-0. Game scores were 30-27, 30-25 and 30-24.
Freshman Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg)led FSU with 14 kills followed by sophomore Caryn Wright (Pikesville, Md./Western Tech) with 10. Winterling also posted nine digs.
Senior Amanda Hernandez (Crofton, md./Arundel) handed out 30 assists and sophomore Jennifer Wheaton (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) had nine digs.
In the second match, FSU was defeated by Scranton 3-1. The Royals captured the first two games (30-27 & 30-26), but FSU was able to rebound with a 31-29 victory in the third contest. However, in the fourth game, Scranton closed out the match with a 30-21 win.
Winterling led the way by posting a double-double, 22 kills and 15 digs. Classmate Samantha Quirin (Lovettsville, Va./Loudoun Valley) also had a strong match smashing 11 kills.
Hernandez had 44 assists, her second highest total on the season, and Wheaton recorded 14 digs.
The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow for day two of the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic.
