COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. —
The Frostburg State volleyball team is one of just 26 Division III programs to receive the prestigious American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for 2002-03.
The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors college and high school teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale and a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale during the school year.
"Our team works very hard both in the classroom and on the volleyball court," said third-year head coach Jeff Billington, who guided FSU to a 25-10 overall record, including a perfect 12-0 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, and the program's fifth AMCC title in six years. "The players set very high academic and athletic goals each year, and I am very proud to see that their efforts are being recognized."
A record-number 205 programs earned the distinction this year — 102 from the college ranks and 103 from the high school level. The breakdown of college representation includes 35 NCAA Division I programs, 18 NCAA Division II programs, 26 NCAA Division III programs, 15 NAIA programs, one NCCAA institution and seven two-year college programs.
Additionally, Frostburg State was among 26 teams to earn both the AVCA Team Academic Award and a berth in their respective collegiate post-season tournament. The Bobcats advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the third time in the last four years, where they dropped a heart-breaking 3-2 match (30-27, 30-27, 14-30, 25-30, 13-15) to Gettysburg in the first round.
FSU had four All-AMCC selections, including Lauren Petrick, who was named the league's Co-Player of the Year. Petrick also earned Verizon Academic All-District II College Division third team honors.
With 10 players returning from last year's squad and the addition of a top recruiting class, the Bobcats are poised for a run at a top-five regional ranking and another berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2003.
