FROSTBURG, Md. -
The Frostburg State volleyball team ended its regular season Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 defeat of Pitt-Bradford at Bobcat Arena.
With the win, FSU (12-18, 7-2) earns the No. 3 seed in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament and will host UPB (9-11, 3-6) for a rematch in the opening round on Tuesday, October 31 at 7:00 pm.
In game one of this afternoons contest, FSU held a slim 10-8 lead but blew the game wide open by scoring 10 out of the next 11 points to extend its lead to 20-9.
The Panthers would come as close as 26-19 but the Bobcats went on for a 30-21 win.
Frostburg State opened an early 5-3 lead in the second game but Pitt-Bradford battled back to take an 8-6 advantage.
The visitors would continue to lead with the score 20-19, but the Bobcats would again blow the game open by scoring 10 out of the next 12 points before going on for a 30-23 victory.
Frostburg State held the lead throughout the third game, including leads of 11-5, 17-10 and 25-16. With FSU holding a 28-20 edge late in the contest, UPB fought its way back to narrow the score to 29-27 but the Bobcats scored the final point to slip away with a 30-27 win.
Freshman Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) led FSU with 11 kills while classmates Chelsea Wassell (Westernport, Md./Southern Garrett) had 10 and Leslie Brown (Fort Washington, Md./Bishop McNamara) recorded seven. Brown, however, led Frostburg State with six blocks.
Senior setter Amanda Hernandez (Crofton, Md./Arundel) had 28 assists and three blocks and sophomore Jennifer Wheaton (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) posted 13 digs.
