HUNTINGDON, Pa. -
Frostburg State jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Gettysburg, but the Bullets stormed back to hand the Bobcats a 3-2 loss in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday afternoon at Juniata College.
FSU, playing in its third NCAA Tournament in the last four years, claimed the first two games by identical 30-27 scores and looked to be in control.
However, Gettysburg, making its 10th NCAA appearance in school history, rebounded with 30-14 and 30-25 victories to pull even and then held off FSU, 15-13, in the fifth and deciding contest.
The Bullets (24-13) advance to Saturday's regional semifinal round and will face region host Juniata, currently ranked No. 3 in the nation.
Junior Kelli Bumgarner (Calvert/Chesapeake Beach, Md.) led FSU with 18 kills and added 12 digs, while sophomore Lauren Petrick (North Caroline/Denton, Md.) posted 12 kills, 16 digs and two service aces.
Freshman Carly McDonald (Northern/Owings, Md.) had 12 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Carrie Ness (Francis Scott Key/Taneytown, Md.) recorded 51 assists, 20 digs and four aces.
Senior Stacy Bureau (Richard Montgomery/Rockville, Md.) and sophomore Sam Seyfferth (Broadneck/Annapolis, Md.) had 11 kills and 15 digs, respectively.
Frostburg State ends its season at 25-10.
