- Frostburg State University volleyball earned a second place finish in the Greyhound Premiere Invitational on Saturday finishing 3-1 overall losing their only match to champion and host Moravian University. Following the loss to Moravian, the Bobcats needed a five-game victory over Ithaca College to earn the second place finish.
In the first game Moravian, who finished last season ranked one spot ahead of FSU in the regional rankings, overpowered the Bobcats in three games 30-32, 16-30, and 17-30. However, Frostburg State was able to rebound and win a thrilling 5-game match against Ithaca 30-20, 25-30, 30-24, 28-30, and 15-8.
In the second match junior Jodi Carpenter (Linganore/Mt. Airy, Md.) led the way with 18 kills and junior Lauren Petrick (North Caroline/Denton, Md.) added 15, while recording 21 digs. For the weekend Carpenter recorded 38 kills, while Petrick had 37.
Senior Kelly Bumgarner (Calvert/Chesapeake Beach, Md.) recorded 13 kills against Ithaca, freshman Lauren Weller (Gaithersburg/Gaithersburg, Md.) served up four aces, junior Sam Seyfferth (Broadneck/Annapolis, Md.) had 25 digs raising her total to 60 for the tournament, and junior Carrie Ness (Francis Scott Key/Taneytown, Md.) recorded 58 assists in the second game for a total of 138 on the weekend.
The Bobcats now stand 3-1 on the young season and will next take on Catholic University and Christopher Newport in a tri-match on September 1st at Catholic University starting at 3:00 pm.
