FROSTBURG, Md. -
The Frostburg State volleyball team dropped both opening round matches at the Coca Cola Quaker Classic, Friday evening.
The Bobcats (0-2) dropped their season-opening match to Washington and Jefferson, 3-1. Game scores were 30-27, 30-24, 24-30 and 30-19.
The FSU attack was led by freshmen Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) and Samantha Quirin (Lovettsville, Va./Loudoun Valley) who posted 19 and 10 kills, respectively. Winterling also had three digs and three blocks while Quirin had three service aces. Sophomore Caryn Wright (Pikesville, Md./Western Tech) added nine kills and four blocks while freshman Chelsea Wassell (Westernport, Md./Southern Garrett) recorded four blocks.
Senior Amanda Hernandez (Crofton, Md./Arundel) led the way with 42 assists and sophomore Jenny Wheaton (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) posted 14 digs.
In the second game of the day versus Urbana, FSU fell by scores of 30-20, 30-11, 30-21.
Winterling had eight kills and three blocks, Hernandez had three kills and 23 assists and Wheaton recorded 11 digs.
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow in the second round of the Coca Cola Classic at 9:00 am when they take on Greenville.
