FROSTBURG, Md. —
The Frostburg State volleyball team split a home tri-match with Penn State Behrend and Catholic Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.
In the opening match of of the day, FSU (14-15, 5-2 AMCC) lost to Penn State Behrend (22-7, 7-0 AMCC) by the scores of 30-17, 30-21 and 31-29.
In game one, PSB opened up a 9-6 lead and later extended it to 21-14. The Bobcats were unable to build momentum as the Lions scored the last eight points of the game to earn the win.
Penn State Behrend raced out to an 8-3 lead in game two and pushed the lead to 19-9 before the Bobcats scored five straight points to narrow the advantage to 19-14. That is as close as FSU would get however, as the Lions pulled away for the victory.
In game three, the score was tied at six when PSB scored four straight points to take a 10-6 lead. Frostburg State would rebound to score six out of the next seven points to move ahead at 12-11. Penn State Behrend would retake the lead at 17-14 after scoring five straight points.
The two squads battled through the rest of the game with neither team holding more than a two point margin. The last tie came at 29-29 before PSB scored the game’s final two points.
Freshman Caryn Wright (Pikesville, Md./Western Tech) led FSU with 14 kills followed by junior Amanda Frantz (Friendsville, Md./Northern Garrett (Garrett College)) with 11. Senior Carly McDonald (Owings, Md./Northern) posted 13 digs and junior Amanda Hernandez (Crofton, Md./Arundel) had 20 assists. Amanda Evans led the Lions with 46 assists while Elaine Voltz had 17 kills and four blocks.
In the second match of the afternoon, Penn State Behrend downed Catholic (13-18, 4-4 CAC), 3-1, by the scores of 30-18, 24-30, 30-27, and 30-21.
Evans again led the way with 58 assists and eight digs while Voltz recorded 25 kills and four blocks.
In the third and final match, Frostburg State rallied to defeat Catholic 3-1, to avenge a 3-0 defeat earlier in the season.
The teams were deadlocked at 6-6 in game one before the Cardinals opened an 11-8 lead. The CUA advantage was later pushed to five points at 21-16. The Bobcats closed to within 23-22, but Catholic went on a run of five points help earn the win, 30-25.
Frostburg State rebounded in game two opening an 8-2 lead. Freshman Kristen Byron (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) recorded four service aces to help the Bobcats to a 15-7 lead. The Cardinals closed the deficit to 22-19, but four late kills by Frantz sealed the 30-22 Bobcat victory.
In the third game, Catholic found itself losing 4-1 early on but took a 15-12 lead midway through. Frostburg State never trailed again, putting together runs of four, five and four points to gather the win at 30-24.
After CUA took a 1-0 lead in game four, FSU led the rest of the way opening a 5-1 margin. The Cardinals closed to within two at 10-8, but the Bobcat lead would be extended to 20-11 backed by four service points from Hernandez. With the lead at 25-21, senior Kristie Butt (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) served three service points and Frantz had three late kills to help FSU to a 30-22 victory.
Frantz led the squad with 24 kills followed by Wright with 15. McDonald again led FSU with 26 digs and Hernandez handed out an impressive 57 assists.
Frostburg State returns to action Wednesday, October 26 when it travels to Pitt-Greensburg for a 7:00 pm match.
