Volleyball Splits on Opening Day of Maryland State Championships

ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. - Frostburg State earned a split on the first day of the Maryland State Division III Championships, Friday evening on the campus of St. Mary’s College.

The volleyball team defeated Villa Julie, 3-0, in the first game but lost to host St. Mary’s in the second match, 3-1.

Against VJC, the Bobcats won game one 30-19, game two 30-23 and game three 30-23.

Freshman Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) had a double double with 16 kills and 18 digs followed by classmate Chelsea Wassell (Westernport, Md./Southern Garrett) with 12 kills and two service aces and sophomore Caryn Wright (Pikesville, Md./Western Tech) with sevens kills and six blocks.

Senior Amanda Hernandez (Crofton, Md./Arundel) had 33 assists and sophomore Jennifer Wheaton (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) posted 13 digs and three service aces.

In the second game of the day, FSU fell to St. Mary’s. The Seahawks took games one and two, 30-21 and 30-22, respectively. In the third game, Frostburg State won 30-27 but the hosts closed out the match with a 31-29 game four victory.

Winterling and Wassell each posted a double-double. Winterling had 29 kills and 17 digs while Wassell recorded 21 kills and 18 digs.

Wright also had a solid final match with 12 kills and six blocks and Wheaton finished tied for second on the team with 17 digs.

Hernandez had a solid effort with 48 assists.

The Bobcats return to the court tomorrow for the second round of the Maryland State Division III Championships.
