Volleyball Splits Tri-Match

Frostburg, Md. ... Freshman Lauren Petrick (Denton, Md./North Caroline) had a team-high 14 kills and fellow freshman Jen Vance (Mt. Savage, Md./Fort Hill) added 10 kills to lead Frostburg State to a 3-0 sweep of Randolph-Macon Women's College in a tri-match at Bobcat Arena Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats dropped a hard-fought 3-2 match to Rowan (N.J.) University in their second match of the day to fall to 2-3 on the season.

In the opener, FSU turned in a 30-18, 30-26, 30-17 victory over the Wild Cats. The Bobcats trailed early in game one, 4-2, before opening a 9-6 advantage. Frostburg State slowly began to pull away, eventually building a 21-12 bulge, and scored six of the final seven points of the game to take a 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats spotted RMWC a 9-4 lead in the opening moments of game two but used a 7-2 run to move in front, 15-14. The Wild Cats rallied for a 23-20 edge before FSU closed it out by scoring 10 of the last 13 points.

In game three, the Bobcats again rallied from an early deficit, overcoming a 9-6 Wild Cat lead with four straight points. FSU then used a 15-3 run to open a 28-15 edge before putting RMWC away, 30-17.

In their second match of the day, the Bobcats battled the Profs in a tough five-game heartbreaker. After falling 30-28 in the opening game, FSU rallied to tie the match with a 30-25 victory in game two. Vance served up five straight winners to give the hosts a 19-12 lead and Rowan could not get any closer than five the rest of the way.

The Bobcats held a 14-13 lead in the third game but watched at the Profs moved back in front, 22-16. Freshman Carrie Ness (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) and Vance served up a 7-1 run to bring FSU even at 23, however Rowan took a slight 28-26 advantage. FSU again responded with four straight points, and after the Profs tied it at 29, the Bobcats closed out the game with two straight winners to take a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth game, Rowan powered its way to a 6-2 lead and strung together six points in a row before pulling away for the 30-22 victory to force a fifth and deciding game. The Profs broke a 4-4 tie by notching six of the next seven points before Petrick served three consecutive winners to bring FSU to within a point, 10-9. Three straight points by Rowan forced the Bobcats to call timeout, and the visitors tacked on two more points to seal the match win.

Petrick led FSU with 15 kills, while Ness recorded 42 assists.

Frostburg State returns to action against AMCC rival Pitt-Bradford on Monday at 4:00 p.m.
