Volleyball Sweeps Lake Erie to Remain in Hunt for Final AMCC Tournament Berth
10/19/2001

FROSTBURG, MD — Freshman Lauren Petrick (Denton, Md./North Caroline) posted eight kills, 19 assists and two service aces to lead Frostburg State to a 30-15, 30-22, 30-22 sweep of Lake Erie Friday night at Bobcat Arena.

The Bobcats improved to 10-14 overall and 4-5 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, while the Storm fell to 3-15 overall and 0-9 in the AMCC. Frostburg State entered Friday night a game behind La Roche for the final berth in the AMCC Tournament.

La Roche was in action Friday night against second-place Pitt-Bradford, but the result was not available

Frostburg State had little trouble in game one, opening a quick 7-0 lead. Lake Erie closed to within 7-4, but the Bobcats scored eight of the next 12 points to build a 15-8 edge and were never challenged the rest of the way.

Lake Erie hung tough in the second game, trailing just 4-3 before FSU reeled off six straight points, including five from the serving of junior Lori Glatt (Rockville, Md./Magruder), who finished the night with three aces.

The Storm later pulled to within three, 23-20, but the Bobcats closed out the win by scoring seven of the last nine points.

The two squads then battled through a close final contest that included five ties through the first half of the game. Lake Erie took four early leads before FSU went on a 7-3 run to open a 14-11 advantage.

The Storm pulled even at 14 before the Bobcats answered with an 8-4 spurt to take move ahead, 22-18.

Lake Erie made things interesting by scoring three straight points to make it a 22-21 contest, but junior Stacy Bureau (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) served up five consecutive winners as the Bobcats ended the match with an 8-1 run.

Junior Marjorie Loggie (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill), freshman Jen Vance (Mt. Savage, Md./Fort Hill) and freshman Carrie Ness (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) each added seven kills, while freshman April Caprarola (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) posted 13 digs.

Frostburg State will host Penn State Behrend in another key AMCC match tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
