— Top-seeded Frostburg State defeated second-seeded Penn State Behrend, 3-0, in a rematch of the last two season championship finals, to win its fifth Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship in six years.
The Bobcats (25-9) cruised to victory in the first game as they beat the Lions (16-17) 30-17, winning the last six points on the serve of freshman Carly McDonald (Northern/Owings, Md.). The second game was much closer as Penn State Behrend took its first lead of the match at 21-20, before FSU scored six of the next seven points and hold on for the 30-28 victory.
The third and final game of the match started off with the Bobcats taking eight straight points on the serve of sophomore Lauren Petrick (North Caroline/Denton, Md.), who had three service aces during the stretch, before holding on for an exciting 30-27 win and the AMCC Championship title.
Frostburg State was led on the day by junior Kelli Bumgarner (Calvert/Chesapeake Beach, Md.) who had 13 kills and 11 digs, while senior Stacy Bureau (Richard Montgomery/Rockville, Md.) added 9 kills to complete the sweep of the Lions.
The AMCC gave out their All-Conference Awards after the championship match and sophomore Lauren Petrick (North Caroline/Denton, Md.) was voted Co-Player of the Year along with Pitt-Bradford junior Amanda Gressley. Head Coach Jeff Billington was also named Coach of the Year in the AMCC this season, after leading the Bobcats to their fourth undefeated conference season in the past five years.
Frostburg State, with its season complete, will now wait for a possible post-season tournament bid.
