- Frostburg State swept both of its matches as the Bobcats played host to Christopher Newport and Penn State Behrend on Sunday afternoon. In the first match, junior Lauren Petrick (North Caroline/Denton, Md.)
recorded her 1,000th career kill as she guided the Bobcats to their seventh straight win and their 23rd straight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory.
In the first match, the Bobcats (24-3, 9-0) came out a bit sluggish falling behind Penn State Behrend in the first game 15-12, but quickly recovered to pull even at 17-17 before gaining the advantage 21-17 on five straight points from junior Carrie Ness. FSU held strong as it held on to the lead winning the first game 30-27.
In the second and third games the Bobcats took early control of both games gaining a 19-7 lead, as they were able to close out the Lions 30-21 and 30-14 to win their 23rd straight AMCC match.
Highlighting the victory for the Bobcats was Petrick, who in the second game with the Bobcats leading 18-6, recorded her 1,000th career kill as she led the way with 12 kills against Behrend.
In their second match of the day, the Bobcats defeated Christopher Newport 30-13, 30-15, and 30-28. FSU continued its domination coming out solid in the first two games taking control early in both games and closing out the Captains easily.
However, in the third game CNU played even with the Bobcats throughout the game as the two teams exchanged five leads with the Bobcats closing out the Captains 30-28 on back-to-back kills from Petrick.
Sophomore Carly McDonald (Northern/Owings, Md.) paced the Bobcats as she had a team-high 20 kills and six service aces. The Bobcats also received a great performance from Petrick, who had 17 kills. Freshman Amanda Hernandez (Arundel/Crofton, Md.) and junior Carrie Ness (Francis Scott Key/Taneytown, Md.) combined for 74 assists on the day as Hernandez had 40 and Ness recorded 34.
As a team the Bobcats had 20 service aces, five solo blocks and 15 assisted blocks. In the first match FSU had a .244 hitting percentage against Penn State Behrend and a .300 hitting percentage versus CNU.
In the middle match of the tri-match, Penn State Behrend defeated Christopher Newport 3-1, as the Lions dropped the first game, but rallied to win the next three.
The Bobcats will return to action this week as they travel to Pitt-Greensburg on Tuesday, October 21st to battle UPG before returning home next weekend to host Pitt-Bradford and Messiah College in another tri-match on Sunday, October 25th starting at 11:00 am.
