— The Frostburg State volleyball team was swept in the opening round of the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic Friday evening. In the opening match, the Bobcats lost to Elizabethtown 3-1 while dropping the second match to Rutgers-Newark, 3-0.
The Bobcats (1-6) dropped the first two games against Elizabethtown 30-27 and 30-22, respectively. However, FSU rebounded to win game three 31-29, but the Blue Jays proved to much as they snuck out with a 30-28 victory in game four.
Junior Amanda Hernandez (Crofton, Md./Arundel) had a solid all-around performance posting 33 assists, 21 digs and 2.5 blocks. Senior Carly McDonald (Owings, Md./Northern) led the Bobcat attack smashing 12 kills while senior Kristie Butt (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) had four service aces.
In second match of the evening, FSU lost to Rutgers-Newark 30-23, 30-26 and 30-28.
McDonald had eight kills and 20 digs while junior Amanda Frantz (Friendsville, Md./Northern Garrett (Garrett College)) also had eight kills to go along with 2.5 blocks and two service aces. Freshman Caryn Wright (Pikesville, Md./Western Tech) had a season-high eight kills and Hernandez again led the team with 31 assists.
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow at 11:00 am against Lycoming followed by a match against York at 1:00 pm.
