Volleyball Topples Top-Seeded Penn State Altoona to Advance to Fifth Straight AMCC Title Match
ALTOONA, Pa —
Freshman Lauren Petrick (Denton, Md./North Caroline)
recorded a team-high 13 kills to go along with a career-high 22 digs and three service aces to lead fourth-seeded Frostburg State to a 3-1 upset (32-30, 21-30, 30-23, 30-15) of top-seed and tournament host Penn State Altoona in the semifinals of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament Friday night.
The Bobcats (14-17) will play for their fifth straight AMCC title against No. 2 Penn State Behrend Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Lions downed No. 3 Pitt-Bradford, 3-1, in Friday's other semifinal contest.
Frostburg State, which dropped both regular-season matches to Penn State Altoona, came out firing in the first game and pulled out a thrilling 32-30 win.
The Cougars (17-7) tied the match with a 30-21 victory in game two, but the youthful Bobcats captured game three, 30-23, before closing out the upset with an impressive 30-15 win in the fourth stanza.
Junior Marjorie Loggie (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill) and freshman Jen Vance (Mt. Savage, Md./Fort Hill) each recorded 12 kills, while freshman Sam Seyfferth (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) led the team with 23 digs.
Freshman Carrie Ness (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) tied her career high with 50 assists and added 16 digs and four blocks, and freshman April Caprarola (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) posted a career-high 22 digs.
