09/18/2004

FROSTBURG, MD - Frostburg State swept both Johns Hopkins and Salisbury by 3-0 scores to win its second straight ASICS Maryland Division III Collegiate State Volleyball Tournament Saturday afternoon in Bobcat Arena.

The Bobcats (10-3) defeated all four of their tournament opponents by 3-0 scores to increase their winning streak to nine matches.

In its opening match against Johns Hopkins, Frostburg State posted 30-25, 30-28 and 30-23 victories.

Seniors Lauren Petrick (Denton, Md./North Caroline) and Jodi Carpenter (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) each recorded 15 kills, while junior Carly McDonald (Owings, Md./Northern) added 11 kills and 15 digs.

Senior Carrie Ness (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) and sophomore Amanda Hernandez (Crofton, Md./Arundel) had 24 and 23 assists, respectively. Senior Sam Seyfferth (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) led a strong defensive effort with 23 digs.

Frostburg State and Salisbury then took 3-0 records into the final match of the day to decide the championship.

In game one, the Bobcats built a 23-13 advantage en route to a 30-20 victory.

Game two was a back-and-forth contest with FSU eventually claiming a 30-26 win. The Bobcats held a 6-3 lead before the Sea Gulls ripped off five straight points to move ahead 8-6. FSU rallied to take a 15-13 advantage and later led 26-21, but Salisbury closed to within one at 27-26. After taking a timeout, the Bobcats scored four straight to close out the game.

Salisbury looked to rally in game three, building an 18-12 advantage. However, FSU went on an 8-2 run behind the serving of Ness and McDonald to pull even at 20. Petrick snapped a 21-21 deadlock with two straight kills in a 7-0 Bobcat run. Carpenter ended the match with the last of her team-high 17 kills to give the Bobcats their second state title in as many years.

Petrick had 14 kills and 11 digs, while McDonald added 10 kills and 12 digs. Hernandez finished with 28 assists and 15 digs, and Ness had 20 assists, seven digs and five kills. Seyfferth posted 22 digs.
