— Frostburg State caprtured two wins on day one of the Second Annual ASICS Maryland Division III Collegiate State Volleyball Tournament Friday in Bobcat Arena.
In their opening match, the Bobcats(8-3) defeated Villa Julie 3-0. FSU jumpred out to a quick start and kept the pressure on taking game one, 30-12. In the second game however, the Bobcats struggled with a fiery Mustang squad but eventually put them away 30-25. FSU would take care of business in game three winning, 30-19.
Senior Lauren Petrick (Denton, Md./North Caroline) led the Bobcat attack with 16 kills while junior Carly McDonald (Owings, Md./Northern) added 12 kills and nine digs.
Senior Carrie Ness (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) handed out 23 assists and sophomore Amanda Hernandez (Crofton, Md./Arundel) recorded 19 assists and 14 digs.
In similar fashion, Frostburg State defeated Washington 3-0 in its second match. The Bobcats beat the Shorewomen in game one, 30-14. In game two, Frostburg State built a 13-3 lead en route to a 30-15 victory.
The third game proved to be another struggle as the Bobcats trailed the Shorewomen for the first time 20-19. The Bobcats held a slim 25-23 lead before McDonald closed out the match with five staright service points.
For the second straight series, Petrick paced the Boback attack with 14 kills and eight digs. Carpenter recorded 13 kills, 12 digs, three service aces and three solo blocks. Ness and Hernandez bettered their earlier performances dishing out 28 and 20 assists, respectively.
Frostburg, Salisbury and Johns Hopkins all advance to Satruday’s championship bracket with 2-0 records. The Bobcats face off against Johns Hopkins tomorrow at 11 am and then take on Salisbury at 1 pm.
