Women's Basketball Blows Out Villa Julie
12/01/2004

FROSTBURG, MD — Redshirt-freshman Amanda Hernandez (Crofton, Md./Arundel) scored a career-high 21 points, including 16 in the second half, and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to lead the Frostburg State women’s basketball team to an 84-58 victory over Villa Julie Wednesday evening at Bobcat Arena.

FSU (2-2) used an 6-0 run to start the second half opening an 18-point lead. Sophomore Tracie George (Windber, Pa./Windber) hit a jumper, followed by a layup from junior Melanie Herget (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) and two free throws from junior Stpehanie Watts (Baltimore, Md./North County). Villa Julie then outscored the Bobcats 10-2 closing the gap back to ten at 51-41.

Frostburg State then put the game out of reach with a 25-6 run over a six-minute stretch to increase the lead to 76-47. Hernandez scored 16 points during that stretch, including three straight three-pointers to cap the run.

The Bobcats had their largest lead of 29 points several times, the last coming with 44 seconds remaining.

The teams battled through the first eight minutes of the first half with the Mustangs (2-2) holding a slim 11-10 advantage. The Bobcats took their first lead, 12-11, on a jumper from junior Holly Steinacker (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty).

The Bobcats would never trail again after senior Tracey Little (LaVale, Md./Allegany) made a layup giving them a 17-16 lead. FSU would push the lead to 35-18 when Hernandez drained her first of four three-pointers on the evening.

Cara Hill made a three-pointer for Villa Julie with 57 seconds remaining to narrow the Bobcat lead to 43-29 at the break.

Little scored 17 points and added seven rebounds for the Bobcats. George and junior Kelly True (Warfordsburg, Pa./Southern Fulton) each added eight points, while freshman Amber Perry (Upper Marlboro, Md./Suitland) dished out a team-high five assists.

Villa Julie was led by Hill, who scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Frostburg State returns to action Friday, December 3rd when it travels to Pitt-Bradford to open up Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action at 6:00 pm.
