— Frostburg State fell to host Scranton University in the final of the Diversified Invitational, 65-54, Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats (6-2) battled back and forth with Scranton right from the start, taking an early 3-2 lead on a senior Stephanie Watts (Baltimore, Md./North County) three-pointer. A junior Tracie George (Windber, Pa./Windber) jumper would give the Bobcats a 15-13 lead with just over ten minutes to play in the first half.
The #10 ranked Lady Royals (8-1) would then go on a 16-6 run over the next five minutes to take a 29-21 lead. Watts would then make two free-throws and a three-pointer at the end of the half to cut the margin to 31-26.
The two teams would trade baskets for the first seven minutes of the second half until Watts made a lay-up to tie the score at 36. Back-to-back baskets by junior Krystin Hargrove (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) and senior Kenya Broadnax (Jessup, Md./Howard) would give FSU its first lead of the second-half, 42-41.
Scranton would then start to slowly pull away with a 17-8 run over the next six minutes to take a 58-50 lead. The Bobcats cut that lead to four, 58-54, on baskets from Hargrove and freshman Caryn Wright (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) with 2:30 remaining in the game.
The Royals would then make five of six free-throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Watts, who was named to the all-tournament team, led FSU with 12 points and seven assists. Broadnax also scored 12 points while pulling down a career-high 14 rebounds.
