BETHANY, WV —
Leigh Sulkowski scored a game-high 22 points and added six steals to lead Washington & Jefferson to a 79-45 win over Frostburg State in the opening game of the Bethany (W.Va.) Holiday Invitational Friday night.
Sulkowski hit 11-of-17 shots from the floor for the Presidents, who shot 50 percent (34-of-68) for the game and improved to 5-0.
Frostburg State was held to just 29.3 percent (17-of-58) from the field and fell to 5-2 on the year.
The Bobcats hung tough in the opening minutes, taking an 11-9 lead on a three-pointer by senior Naomi Mason (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) at the 15:11 mark. However, W&J moved back in front with six straight points before sophomore Tracey Little (LaVale, Md./Allegany) sank a jumper to pull FSU to within 15-13.
W&J then took control of the game with a 22-3 run, including 10 straight points to start the outburst, to build a 37-16 advantage with 5:21 left in the first half.
The Presidents kept up their strong play in the second stanza and led by as many as 39, 79-40, in the final minutes.
FSU shot just 9-of-23 in the opening 20 minutes and hit only 8-of-35 in the second half.
Shawndra McDonald had 13 points and nine assists, while Amy Strosnider and Amanda Stanonik added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for W&J.
Senior Holly Myers (York, Pa./York) led the Bobcats with 11 points, while fellow senior Kim Faust (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin) added seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Little was held to six points and seven boards.
Frostburg State will take on Bethany (W.Va.) tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
