FROSTBURG, MD —
Washington & Jefferson freshman Leigh Sulkowski scored 15 of her game-high 27 points in the first half as the visiting Presidents rolled to a 78-60 win over Frostburg State in the regular-season finale for both schools Monday night at Bobcat Arena.
Sulkowski, who hit 12-of-20 shots from the floor, added eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals to lead W&J (21-1) to its school-record 14th straight win.
Frostburg State (11-14) hung tough through the opening minutes, trailing 10-7 at the 13:54 mark after a three-pointer by senior Naomi Mason (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown). However, the Presidents took control with a 13-2 run over the next 5:46.
The Bobcats used an 8-1 spurt to close to within 24-17, but Sulkowski nailed a jumper and a free throw to put the visitors back up by 10.
Senior Kim Faust (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin) hit a short jumper to make it a 27-19 contest before W&J closed out the half with an 8-2 run to take a 35-21 advantage at the break.
W&J continued to pull away in the second half, outscoring the Bobcats, 13-4, to begin the second stanza. The Presidents' lead grew to as many as 30, 69-39, with 8:34 remaining.
Faust led FSU with 22 points, while sophomore Tracey Little (La Vale, Md./Allegany) recorded her sixth straight double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Freshman Ashley Mello (Edgewood, Md./Edgewood) tied her career high with 10 points.
Junior Shawndra McDonald scored 16 points and dished out seven assists for W&J, and senior Amy Strosnider added 15 points and seven rebounds.
The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday when they host Lake Erie in the first round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament. Tip-off time is 7:00 pm.
