Women's Basketball Loses to Bethany (WV.)Wednesday Night
01/12/2005

FROSTBURG, MD — Bethany junior Jenny Place made four free throws in the final forty seconds to seal the win and lead the visiting Bison to a non-conference road win at Frostburg State Wednesday night, 82-77.

Frostburg State, which trailed 39-37 at the half, came out firing in the second half and took a 46-45 lead on a three-pointer by sophomore Tracie George (Windber, Pa./Windber).

The Bison (5-9) took back the lead, 49-46, on jumpers from sophomore Courtney Irwin and freshman Jessica DeStefano. FSU would answer back on a three-pointer from freshman Amanda Hernandez (Crofton, Md./Arundel) and tie the score at 49.

The Bobcats (7-4) then went on a 13-4 run over a four minute period, with junior Ashley Mello (Joppa, Md./Edgewood) scoring six points and George adding five during the run to make it 62-53.

Bethany answered with a 14-4 run of its own, hitting four three-pointers and adding a layup to take a 67-66 lead and never trailing again. The Bison would stretch the lead to seven on a layup by Place with just over three minutes left.

FSU then battled back on a jumper by Hernandez, a three-pointer from junior Stephanie Watts (Baltimore, Md./North County) and a basket from senior Tracey Little (LaVale, Md./Allegany) to cut the deficit to two at 77-75, with a minute left. That was as close at the Bobcats would get for the game, as Bethany made five of six free-throws to end the game.

The first half saw 13 lead changes and five ties as both teams shot over 45% from the field for the half.

Frostburg State was led on the night by Little who scored 22 points. George added 18 points, sinking four three-pointers, with Hernandez scoring 12 off the bench. Mello grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for the Bobcats.

Senior Nikki Babik led four Bethany players in double figures scoring 20 points. Place added 17 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

Frostburg State returns to action Friday night when it travels to Hilbert College in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action at 6:00 pm.
