— The Frostburg State women’s basketball team had three players score in double figures for the third straight game, as it defeated rival Penn State Behrend, 69-53, in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.
The Bobcats (5-0, 2-0) never trailed in the game opening an early nine-point lead, 12-3, just under four minutes into the game. FSU further extended its lead to 15 points, 27-12, on a senior Stephanie Watts (Balitmore, Md./North County) layup at 7:27.
Frostburg State took its largest lead of the half, 42-18, on a sophomore Teara Williams (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) layup with six seconds left until halftime. Penn State Behrend (1-3, 0-2) made two late free throws to narrow the gap to 42-20 at intermission.
FSU came out in the second half and kept the pressure on as it opened a 25-point lead, 55-30, on a sophomore Amanda LaPorta (Westminster, Md./Westminster) layup.
The Lions made a late charge cutting the deficit to 15 points, 65-50, with just 1:04 left in the game. The Bobcats made four free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Junior Tracie George (Windber, Pa./Windber) led Frostburg State with 14 points and seven assists. Junior Krystin Hargrove (Silver Sping, Md./Springbrook) and freshman Caryn Wright (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) each scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Brittany Mays led PSB with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
The Bobcats return to action Tuesday when they travel to Bethany at 6:00 pm.
