FROSTBURG, Md. — The Frostburg State women’s basketball team extended its winning streak to four games with a 64-53 victory over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Lake Erie, Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.
The Bobcats (15-5, 11-3) were led by junior Krystin Hargrove (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) and freshman Caryn Wright (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech), who each posted a double-double. Hargrove scored 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds while Wright had 13 points and 10 boards.
FSU never trailed in the game and opened with an 8-0 lead two and half minutes into action, after a senior Kenya Broadnax (Jessup, Md./Howard) layup. The Bobcat lead would quickly hit double digits, 15-5, when sophomore Amanda Hernanddez (Crofton, Md./Arundel) made a layup at 12:20.
Frostburg State’s largest lead of the half, 21-7, came with 10:44 remaining after a basket by sophomore Amanda LaPorta (Westminster, Md./Westminster). Lake Erie (5-12, 4-9) answered three minutes later by cutting the FSU lead to eight points, 25-17.
After the Bobcats pushed the lead to 31-19 with 46 seconds left, Loni Sargent made a free throw and Melissa Woods made a layup to cut the LEC deficit to 31-22 at the half.
In the second, Lake Erie narrowed the Frostburg State lead to 39-31 just over four minutes into play. However, Frostburg State used a 10-4 run to push the lead back to 14 points, 49-35, with 9:02 to play.
Angela Bethel cut the FSU lead to 59-51 at 2:02, but the Bobcats made five free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Senior Stephanie Watts (Baltimore, Md./North County) had a solid all-around performance scoring nine points with 10 rebounds, six steals, six assists and two blocks.
LEC was led by Sarah Miller with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bobcats return to Tuesday, Februry 7 when they travel to Mt. Aloysius at 6:00 pm.
