— No. 1 Frostburg State No. 4 defeated Pitt-Greensburg 2-0 in the semifinal round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament Thursday afternoon at Greenway Avenue Stadium.
Frostburg State (13-2-2) will host No. 2 Penn State Behrend in the AMCC championship match Saturday at 2:00 pm. FSU is seeking its fourth consecutive conference tournament title. Pitt-Greensburg ends its season at 13-7.
FSU dominated the first half, outshooting Pitt-Greensburg 17-1, but held just a 1-0 halftime lead on a goal by senior Karen Kotofski (Glen Burnie, Md./Northeast) in the 17th minute.
Kotofski gained possession of the ball in traffic around 20 yards in front of the UPG goal and sent a short touch pass to sophomore Danielle Carter (Rockville, Md./Rockville), who tapped the ball back to Kotofski. Kotofski then buried a shot into the right side of the net for her 19th goal of the year.
FSU had several other scoring chances in the first half, but came away empty.
In the eighth minute, junior Beth Hlebasko (New Market, Md./Linganore) sent a corner kick that deflected off a Pitt-Greensburg player, hit the crossbar and went over the net. UPG goalie Dana Huether made a diving save in the 18th minute and also stopped a Kotofski header in the 24th minute.
Kotofski almost had her second goal of the game in the first minute of the second half, but her short range shot was right at Huether.
The score remained 1-0 until the 82nd minute when junior Erin Carraghan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) blasted a shot past Huether off a pass from fellow classmate Jodie Gittleson (Rockville, Md./Wootton) to cap the scoring.
Senior goalie Kelly Jones (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) made one save to earn her fourth shutout this season, while Huether had 11 stops.
