- Frostburg State, who came into the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament as the regular season champions for the first time in the programs history, won its third consecutive conference title by defeating second seed Penn State Behrend 4-2 on Saturday afternoon.
In the first half, the Bobcats (15-4) fell behind 1-0, as Kacie Burns converted a corner kick from Holly Greiner in the 27th minute. FSU answered the Lions (13-7-1) as junior Becky Rambo (Hereford/Freeland, Md.) took a pass from junior Karen Kotofski (Northeast/Glen Burnie, Md.) and put the ball past Lion goalkeeper Liz Hall in the 40th minute.
Tied a 1-1 in the second half, FSU freshman Danielle Carter (Rockville/Rockville, Md.) put the Bobcats ahead as she made a spectacular move to her left foot and hooked the ball into the upper left corner of the net for a 2-1 lead with 23 minutes remaining.
Just six minutes later, Carter ran down a pass from Rambo before a charging Hall could reach the ball. Carter played the ball under Hall and rolled it slowly into the net to put the Bobcats up 3-1.
However, Penn State Behrend was not going to give in so easily as it countered to pull within one when Greiner scored with 12 minutes remaining. On the play, senior goalkeeper Stephanie Zych (Guilderland/Slingerlands, N.Y.) was able to make two saves, but the ball rebounded directly to Greiner, who slammed the ball into the upper netting.
Kotofski sealed the game for FSU as she made a move in the box to elude two defenders and rocketed a ball over the fingertips of Hall to put the Bobcats up 4-2. The goal was Kotofski’s 22nd on the season, which sets a new FSU single-season record, breaking her old mark of 21 she set as a freshman in 2001. With three points on the afternoon, Kotofski now has 49 points on the season, which also ties the FSU single-season record that she also set in 2001.
Zych recorded four saves for her school-record 47th career victory. She also owns the school career records with 424 saves and 19 shutouts.
Frostburg State now awaits a possible third consecutive invitation to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Selections will be announced Monday, November 10th.
