GROVE CITY, PA -
Grove City scored a pair of goals in the first half and held off a late Frostburg State charge with two more tallies in the second half to claim a 4-2 win Wednesday afternoon.
Freshman Danielle Carter (Rockville, Md./Rockville) scored both of Frostburg State's goals in the road loss.
In the first half an unlucky bounce allowed Stacey Brubaker to get the ball over a charging Stephanie Zych (Guilderland/Slingerlands, N.Y.) for the first goal of the game. Grove City extended the lead to 2-0 ten minutes later as Kate Klingensmith was credited for a Bobcat own goal on a corner kick.
The Bobcats determined to make another come from behind win cut the lead to one as Carter made a run all the way across the field out-running the defense and sliding the ball passed a diving Lindsay Thompson.
FSU continued to create scoring chances just could not find a way to convert and when Meg Tilley found herself alone in the box with a easy score the game seemed to be in control with less than 20:00 to play. However, two minutes later Carter once again made a long run this time up the right side and again slide the ball passed a diving Thompson for her second goal on the afternoon, cutting the led back to one.
Still fighting, the Bobcats found themselves earning quality chances but nothing seemed to bounce their way. Then with just over five minutes remaining a defensive breakdown allowed the Lady Wolverines to find Leah Partridge open for the insurance they needed as Carter almost found the goal for a third time firing the ball off the left post and then was unable to get to the rebound.
Grove City improved to 3-3-1 while FSU fell to 4-4. Both teams earned berths to the NCAA Tournament last season.
The Bobcats will look to rebound against Bethany (W.Va.) this weekend as they will host them at Frostburg State University at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2003.
