FROSTBURG, MD —
Sophomore Jessica Bencin scored twice and added an assist to lead Division II University of Findlay past host Frostburg State, 4-2, Wednesday afternoon.
The Oilers improved to 6-4-1 on the season, while the Bobcats, who dropped their first home match of the year, fell to 13-3.
Frostburg State took a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game when freshman Karen Kotofski (Glen Burnie, Md./Northeast) scored her team-high 16th goal of the year off a pass from fellow freshman Aimee Sprague (South Yarmouth, Mass./Yarmouth).
Bencin answered for Findlay in the 24th minute off an assist from Janna McKinley, but the Bobcats regained the lead just 1:35 later when junior Tiffany Parker (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) converted a penalty kick after being brought down in the box.
Freshman Megan Innes pulled the Oilers even again five minutes later when she headed Bencin's corner kick just inside the left post, and the teams went into halftime tied at two.
Findlay took the lead for good just 4:33 into the second half as junior Brittany Milam found the upper right corner of the net from 10 yards out with a feed from junior Mindy George, and the Oilers tacked on an insurance tally when sophomore Kristen Dutczak sent a pass behind the Bobcat defense to Bencin, who beat FSU sophomore goalie Stephanie Zych (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland).
Oiler sophomore Erin Finnegan made six saves in the win, while Zych stopped a career-high 14 shots for FSU. Findlay held a 26-13 advantage in shots.
Frostburg State returns to action on Saturday when it visits Keuka at 1:00 p.m.
