Women's Soccer Gets Revenge With Shutout Victory Over Westminster
10/26/2003

FROSTBURG, MD - Frostburg State defeated Westminster College 1-0 Sunday afternoon to extend its impressive winning streak to seven games. The Bobcats, who had their season ended by the Titans last fall in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament, received the game-winning goal from sophomore Shera Rowan (Bishop Walsh/Frostburg, Md.) midway through the second half.

Frostburg State (11-4) controlled every aspect of the game as it out shot Westminster 11-1 in the second half and 20-6 overall. In the second half, the scoring chances mounted for FSU with Rowan finally converting one pacing the Bobcats to the 1-0 victory.

In the 59th minute junior co-captain Alyse Reed (Cherry Hill East/Cherry Hill, N.J.) found herself in possession of the ball in the box and fired it at the goalkeeper, who was unable to control the save.

On the rebound Rowan, making her first start of the season and the second of her career, was able to strike the ball back at the net and off the fingertips of the goalkeeper. The ball then slowly trickled over the line and into the goal for the game-winner. It was Rowan’s third goal of the season.

The defensive unit, anchored by sophomore Beth Hlebasko (Linganore/New Market, Md.), limited the Titans (12-6) to only one scoring opportunity all afternoon. However, that single opportunity may have changed the entire outcome of the game.

With 25 seconds remaining in the first half, Hlebasko found herself alone defensively on a two-on-one breakaway for the Titans. She tried to shut it down, but Westminster was able to slide the ball past her leaving forward Christa Andamasaris alone with senior goalkeeper Stephanie Zych (Guilderland/Slingerlands, N.Y.).

Then out of nowhere junior defender Lynnea Finch (Franklin/Owings Mill, Md.) ran down the play from behind and made a saving slide tackle in the box clearing the ball downfield to end the half still deadlocked at zero.

The shutout victory was Zych’s third this year and 17th of her career, which is a school record.

Frostburg State will close out its season this coming week with a make-up game at Bethany (W.Va.) on October 30th at 4:00 pm and a road contest at Penn State Behrend on November 1st starting at noon.
