FROSTBURG, MD —
The Frostburg State women’s soccer team will travel to Denison for the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Friday, November 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Barclay-Thomsen Field.
The Bobcats (11-5-3) earned an automatic bid into the tournament after winning a penalty-kick shootout, 4-3, against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference rival Penn State Behrend on Saturday. The game was scoreless after two overtime periods and had to go to a shootout. Senior Jodie Gittleson (Rockville, Md./Wootton) clinched the win after knocking in the team’s fourth shot.
Junior Danielle Carter (Rockville, Md./Rockville) leads the Bobcats with 11 goals and 23 points. Sophomore goalie Molly Whyte (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) has allowed only 11 goals and has posted a 0.58 goals against average and a .864 save percentage.
The Big Red (14-3-3) earned their ninth (seventh in the last nine years) berth in school history and were the regular season champions of the North Coast Athletic Conference. Denison is currently ranked No. 12 in the latest NSCAA/adidas top-25 poll.
Denison is led by senior Colleen Wirtz with nine goals and 20 points. Sophomore goalie Liz Gillette has a goals against average of 0.63, allowing just 13 goals in 20 games, with a .824 save percentage and nine shutouts.
Prior to the Denison-Frostburg State game, Hope College (18-2) , winners of the Michigan Athletic Association conference tournament, will face off against DePauw University (11-6-0), champions of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The winners of the two first round matches will return for a second round match on Saturday, Nov. 12.
Admission to all games will be $6 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens and $2 for children ages 3-12.
