ERIE, PA —
Penn State Behrend won three singles matches in straight sets and held off Frostburg State, 4-3, in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference women's tennis match Sunday.
The Bobcats (3-4 overall, 1-1 AMCC), playing without their regular players at the fourth, fifth and sixth singles positions, split the two doubles matches to begin the day.
Senior Christina Miserandino (Westminster, Md./Westminster) and sophomore Rachel Sooy (Crofton, Md./Arundel) were blanked by the senior tandem of Angela Albertson and Lennys Redondo, 8-0, before freshman Kirsten Getz (Frostburg, Md./Beall) and senior Becky Allnutt (Frederick, Md./Catoctin) pulled the Bobcats even with an 8-4 win over Michelle Brendel and Christie Leininger at the second doubles flight.
The Lions opened a 2-1 lead after Albertson downed Miserandino, 6-1, 6-3, at the top singles spot. Getz swept Redondo, 6-0, 6-4, to even the match, and Allnutt outlasted Brendel, 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 6-0, to put the Bobcats back in front.
However, Penn State Behrend used Leininger's 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Sooy and Carrie Reedy's 6-1, 6-2 victory over FSU freshman Amber Geiger (Sykesville, Md./Liberty) to complete the win.
Frostburg State will host Penn State Altoona in another AMCC match-up on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
