Training & Development > Programs

OHR has established three different types of programs:

  1. In-House Training & Development Program. The In-House Training & Development Program covers programs that are organized and conducted by FSU. The training offered through this program includes a variety of courses ranging from special interest courses to professional development courses.

  2. E-Learning through SkillSoft. The introduction and implementation of e-learning was prompted by the USM Initiative on Effectiveness and Efficiency (E & E). The goal of E & E is to “increase the quality of the University System of Maryland and its value to the citizens of the state by reducing the System’s overall cost structure and, thereby, freeing up funds for reinvestment in academic priorities.” This goal applies to training and development programs. In consultation with other USM institutions, FSU purchased an e-learning tool from SkillSoft and implemented an e-learning program on November 30, 2004. E-learning through SkillSoft provides a number of benefits to employees, including 24 7 availability.

  3. USM Inter-Institutional Collaborative Program. This program was also established as part of the USM Initiative on E & E. and focuses on increasing access to training opportunities not offered at the home institution, building communities of shared understanding about critical issues affecting staff development, and providing opportunities for staff to take advantage of distinctive training and development opportunities at other USM institutions at no cost to the participating institution.

    The task force determined that USM institutions offer a myriad of in-house training and development programs, many of which are similar or overlap. Some programs are available at one institution but not at others. Resources are plentiful at some institutions but not at other institutions. With these findings in mind, the task force identified several areas of training on which USM institutions may share and collaborate. These are:

    - Conflict Management;
    - Customer Service;
    - Leadership Development and/or Supervision; and
    - Individual Professional Development, such as Stress Management, Time Management, and Change Management.

    The task force is working on the course curriculum and other details regarding how, where and when these courses can be delivered. Employees at each USM institution will be notified by their respective training and development manager of the availability of these courses.
