Overview
On
Sept. 15, 2007, Frostburg State University officially became a charter
member of the American
College & University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). This
commitment provides
framework and support for American colleges and universities to eventually
go climate neutral. Read more about the ACUPCC.
Environmental
sustainability has become increasingly significant at a time when science
and popular opinion have finally reached a consensus: Global
warming is real. The ACUPCC recognizes that promoting environmental
sustainability must happen at the college and university
level for several reasons: First, it is the right thing to do for the
sake of future generations. Second, institutions of higher learning serve
as community role models. Finally, the main task for colleges and universities
is to train the leaders who will develop the social, economic, and technological
solutions to eventually reverse global warming.
Learning Green, Living Green: Frostburg State University's Sustainability Initiative
The
phrase "Learning Green, Living Green" was chosen to represent
FSU's roots in education and highlight its commitment to learning. The
LGLG Initiative includes a steering committee, various subcommittees,
and an intensive communications campaign centered around the slogan "Learning
Green, Living Green".
The
goal of the LGLG Initiative is to engage the FSU community. On this Web
site you will find:
- LGLG Initiative updates
- background information on environmental sustainability
- individual actions that make a big impact
- announcements regarding how to get more involved

Why Do Anything?
The
United States contains about four percent of the world's population. However,
Americans are responsible for over 20 percent greenhouse gas emissions
(2007 EPA
Report). The facts surrounding global warming are clearer now than
ever before. Consider the following:
Between
1961 and 1997, the world’s glaciers lost 890 cubic miles of ice,
causing sea levels to rise. Scientists attribute this change to global
warming. Click to view more Facts.

recognize that not everyone is familiar with concepts like "sustainability"
and "carbon footprint". Click to view Background
