Learning Green, Living Green

The Learning Green, Living Green (LGLG) Sustainability Initiative at Frostburg State University was created as a response to FSU's membership in the Presidents Climate Commitment. This initiative includes a steering committee, various subcommittees, and an intensive communications campaign centered on the concept of Learning Green, Living Green".

Three Actions

On Oct. 15, 2007, the LGLG steering committee selected three out of seven actions provided in the Presidents Climate Commitment Implementation Guide. The three actions chosen include:

  • Energy Star Procurement Policy - Adopt an energy-efficient appliance purchasing policy requiring purchase of ENERGY STAR-certified products in all areas for which such ratings exist. Information on certified products can be found on the Energy Star web site.
  • Green Power Production or Purchasing - Begin purchasing or producing at least 15 percent of our institutions electricity consumption from renewable sources within one year of signing the ACUPCC
  • Waste Minimization - Participate in the Waste Minimization component of the national Recyclemania competition, and adopt three or more associated measures to reduce waste. View associated measures. The GCI steering committee and the Recycling subcommittee will meet in November to discuss which three associated measures will be implemented.

Individual Actions Survey
A request to fill out an electronic survey on green behavior was sent to all FSU students, faculty, and staff in December 2007. Over 500 responses were returned. Results from this survey will be posted on the Individual Actions page.

Recycling Bin Inventory
Members of the Recycling subcommittee are conducting a campus-wide inventory of recycling bins, in an effort to revamp the recycling program at FSU. The committee's goal is to have recycling bins in place at:

  • main entrances to buildings
  • outdoor, high-traffic areas
  • residence hall trash rooms

The recycling committee is in the process of making recommendations regarding resources and staffing. Updates on types of items that can be recycled, and where to recycle them will also be included.
